George Herbert downs tools

I struck the board and cried “No more!
I’ve had enough of DIY
and B&Q. How I abhor
working with wood (chipboard or ply,
or knot-infested solid stuff)
and clouts, tacks, nails and fiddly screws,
cross-head or plain! I’ve had enough
of tools no thinking man would choose,
like hammers, fretsaws, bradawls, drills,
the measuring that’s never right,
the paints and varnish, drips and spills,
just for a botched and sorry sight.
Each misplaced hook, each wobbling shelf
proves I’m no skilful artisan.
In future I’ll devote myself
to tracking down a handyman.”
