Sometimes called the forward slash,
The virgule far exceeds the dash
In what it can both separate and combine or lash.

Its uses span the graphical, from the breaks/in verse quotations,
Down to the mathematical, as with fractions and equations,
And for the undogmatical, either/or equivocations.

Its recent expansion to web addresses
Extends a succession of great successes.

I tip my hat to you, virgule.
As such a multipurpose tool,
You should be taught in grammar school.

The way you go for broke
Makes you a genius stroke.

No wonder that you pose with such pride and forward bearing.
Your fellow punctuation marks can't hide their furtive staring.
They're often somewhat mulish,
And very by-the-rulish,
But they should loosen up and be a little more virgulish.
