My son-in-law changed my ringtone today
(By my request, in case you were unsure):
Instead of the ubiquitous and gay
T-Mobile jingle, aural signature
For calls to both my wife’s phone and my own
(The cause now and then of uncertainty
As to whose phone was ringing), my ringtone
(I know none more distinctive) will now be
Wagner’s Prelude to Tristan und Isolde
(Its opening phrase, that is). So when I hear
That famous, longing gesture, I’ll be told a
New call is waiting for my readied ear.
And whether a scam or someone I know well,
They’ll simply have to wait my Wagner out
While I imbibe the magic of his knell –
The called, and not the caller, claims the clout.
