Tim Love: Both Sides Now

Rows and rows of poets' flair
And extracts replayed on the air
And treasured canons everywhere
I've looked at books that way.

But now they only block my hall
They pile in heaps 2 metres tall
I could have answered Oprah's call
But books got in my way.

I've looked at books from both sides now
From buy and sell, and still somehow
It's fame's illusions I recall
I really don't know books at all.

Launches, runes and mega deals
The dizzy dancing rhymes you feel
As every fairy tale comes real
I've looked at books that way.

But readers browse and never buy,
Celebs out-sell me with their lies
And though I enter every prize
I give my books away.

I've looked at books from both sides now
From give and take, and still somehow
It's fame's illusions I recall
I really don't know books at all.

Tears and fears and feeling proud
To hear "I read you" right out loud
Dreams and schemes and queuing crowds
I've looked at books that way.

But now bookshops are acting strange
They raise their cuts, their rules have changed
If I have lost, then who has gained
By blogging every day?

I've looked at books from both sides now
From hyped to pulped and still somehow
It's fame's illusions I recall
I really don't know books at all.
