S Subramanian : A Letter of Rejection

(After James Stephens’ ‘A Glass of Beer’)

The grumpy lump of a he from his scholar’s lair
Tore my poor submission apart with many a jibe and jeer;
May Satan arrange for him to be eaten by a bear
Flesh; muscle; and the block of bone between ear and ear.

The sadistic Ed, who was always meant to be
A hanging judge, or a soul-brother of Doctor Dread,
Could hardly wait to pass sentence on me,
So he set the referee up to seek my head.

For the gift of my work, any good judge would pray;
But this oaf has hate in his heart, and the verdict will not change;
May he contract some vicious virus that destroys his day,
And leaves his rantings roaming lost on the cyber-range.
