Geoff Lander: Bones of Contention

At Leicester, this March, all York's claims went unheard
as Cumberbatch flowed while the Church re-interred,
(what an HD spectacular!) Richard the Third,
or his bones, the bent proof of a new diagnosis
the doughty young Dick had defied scoliosis.

These ugly remains will have quickly got used
to earning their keep as a tourism boost,
but hearing their kingship so often traduced
they should study their history, not lie there idle,
there have to be plus points besides ‘homicidal’.

A box of old bones, yes, but some queued for hours
to pay their respects with their freshly-cut flowers –
amazing how villains have crowd-pulling powers!
A murderer felled in the Wars of the Roses?
He must have been better than Shakespeare supposes.
