Elizabeth Horrocks: Gravity

In the orchard, sunlight dapples:
Isaac Newton, watching apples –
Reflecting then on what he saw –
Formulates his famous law.

Gravity, it has been found,
Keep’s one’s feet upon the ground.
Without this somewhat heavy feeling,
We’d all be giggling on the ceiling.

Its great attractive force deployed
Helps cover up an inner void
And MPs even hide depravity
With a cloak of seeming gravity.
