Michael Swan: Bin It

The first three lines
make no sense
and I think
shall I bin it
but then I think
wait,
maybe line four
will pull it all together
and of course
this is not the case,
but I tell myself
look, Mike,
you're being self-indulgent,
a poem doesn't just offer itself to you
on a plate,
you have to work at it,
go out to meet it,
dig deep,
let the whole of your being
engage
on many levels
with the multifaceted
vision of the poet,
so I read line five
and I read line six
and I say
what the hell
and bin it.
