Barbara Lydecker Crane: Coldfinch

One can spot a Coldfinch flock
in northern winter round the clock,
shivering in a huddled block.

These yellow finches choose this fate.
Not flying to a southern state
come autumn, they commiserate

in Brrrrrrrs as they band together,
pecking snowflakes off each feather,
shaking heads about the weather.

It’s puzzling why they don’t migrate.
Perhaps this bird can calibrate
what global warming will create.
