Joyce Wilson: Animal Husbandry

O, let me not to the union of two dogs
Deny the need for luck. Not always will
The female join, one of a pair of logs
Swept over passion’s falls, for good or ill.

Oh no. The act requires both time and chance
To crown the purpose of the eager donor,
Who needs encouragement to make romance,
Not suit the schedule of the anxious owner.

The female knows when she is ready for
Insemination by the nearest male.
She’ll give the sign that one must not ignore
By holding up the feather of her tail.

They stand. He enters her. They do not lie.
In breeder’s lingo they will form a tie.
