Jean L. Kreiling: Speaker At An Academic Conference

He’s only here to add another line
to his presumably thin résumé,
so if we listen or we don’t, it’s fine
with him. But I’m offended by the way
he doesn’t look up once, not once; he cares
exactly not at all if he’s engaged
this audience. We sit on cushioned chairs,
we’ve been well fed, we’re comfortably caged
within beige walls, and I sincerely try
to stay awake. But his beige monotone
and pointless Power Point display defy
my best intentions. Somewhere in his drone
might lurk some wisdom, but I’ll never know.
It’s all too beige, and so to sleep I go.
