Katie Mallett: Lavender

In the Lavender Farm in Somerset
My senses were beguiled
By fragrance that encompassed me,
Like a mother round a child.
As the purple heads tossed to and fro
They mesmerised me – I could go
To sleep in that huge bed of flowers
And lie in utter peace for hours.

Now every time I catch the scent
Of lavender, I am enthralled,
Breathing deeply to imbibe
This drug, for such it should be called,
And when at night I go to bed
I spray the pillow by my head
With lavender, to soothe and calm
My restless thoughts, held in its balm.
