I’m in the market for the perfect nutshell
to carry with me for when I’m in doubt.
Not sure of what to answer, how to tell,
I’d reach into my pocket, pull it out.
It should be small to be authoritative.
It has to look as though I’ve thought things through,
distilled them to a purest truth that’s made of
just a pithy talking point or two.
But what type shell would not leave things in limbo?
Brazil nut? Walnut? Each one seems too small.
Odd-sized and-shaped thoughts sticking out akimbo –
you’d need a Samsonite to hold them all.
Each “if,” each “but,” each “maybe, to be fair” –
I’d look at my poor nutshell and despair.
