The cat that’s slinking in our yard
is up to mischief. It is hard
to see it slink, know what it’s at,
and then declare, “It’s just a cat.”

It’s after birds. It’s after mice.
It can’t be stopped. It would be nice
to simply chase it and shout “Scat!”
but that wouldn’t work, since it’s a cat.

No, that wouldn’t work. It’s on the prowl.
I could run after it and howl
while brandishing a stick or bat,
and it would run, since it’s a cat,

But then return once I am gone.
I watch it slink across the lawn
but simply watch, while thinking Drat!
But why freak out? It’s just a cat.
