A collie spied a raptor on a bough
and, in a flash of vision, gave a bark
into what seemed like an Eternal Now.
As promptly as a blast, it shook the dark,
giving that primal, hollow egg a shock.
The bird took to the air (a red-tailed hawk),
atomic clocks began to tick and tap,
the bird steam-whistled, the canine left his mark
on the cosmic background – lighting up the park
of worlds – and slews of pups began to yap.
Back then, a barking dog was still a rarity.
Yet somehow, 14 billion years ago,
a collie woofed into the singularity.
That’s how it happened. Now you really know.
